Before We Get Ahead of Ourselves

November 1st comes, and our minds start filling the calendar. Where are we spending the holidays? Who do we want to see? What needs to get done?
There’s joy in looking forward to things. But it’s easy to get so caught up in preparing for the next two months that we barely notice the day we’re in.

I’m reminding myself that I have a say in how I spend this season. I can make plans thoughtfully, decide what I have room for, and give myself time before saying yes. Everything doesn’t need an answer today.
I want to leave room for the ordinary days of November. To drink my coffee without going through a mental checklist. To get outside, notice the air, and listen when someone I love tells me about their day.
When I feel myself getting ahead of things, I can pause and ask: What needs my attention today? What would feel good to make time for?
Sometimes the answer is getting something done. Sometimes it’s taking a break or calling someone I miss. Paying attention helps me make that choice instead of moving through the day on habit.
And there’s gratitude in that attention. I begin to notice what’s already here: the people who care about me, the comfort of home, the small things that make an ordinary day feel good. Even when life is difficult, there may be something I’m glad I took the time to notice.
We can look forward to the holidays and still be here for today. We can choose plans that feel right for us, leave a little space in the calendar, and trust ourselves to handle things as they come.
One day at a time. There’s a whole season to enjoy that way - xo
